Yukon Tourism Business - Visitor and Reception Center

Whitehorse, Yukon, 1999

The building was designed and constructed on schedule, and slightly below the pre-tender estimate of 2.4million. With simple and elegant massing and discipline the building has contributed significantly to the rehabilitation of the urban space surrounding the Yukon Legislature. The creation of a ceremonial public open space between itself and the Yukon Legislature required innovative negotiations with the city of Whitehorse to reduce parking requirments and allow encroachment onto City property. The closing of First Avenue and creation of a focal point on the river was foreseen in the design and completed in 2001.
